how much
My rate is $75/hour for design work and lettering, with a minimum of $125 per project. Prices depend on chalkboard size, whether or not a custom design is involved, and where your chalkboards are located. I can illustrate existing designs (like a logo or specific branding elements), but am also more than happy to create a custom lettered or seasonal design just for you.
** Please note - I prefer to do chalkboards in white with minimal color accents.

What materials do you use?
I work mostly with white chalk pens. My favorite brand is durable and can be erased with water; and my alternate brand is water proof and can be removed with Windex (great for outdoor sandwich boards and signage). Both have a great opacity and really pop on a dark chalkboard surface. I can work on both regular chalkboards or on chalk-painted surfaces; just know that some chalk paint is more absorbent and can leave a ‘ghost’ of the design when you erase it. I’m happy to recommend some chalk paints that avoid this, if you need them!
I have no idea how long projects take, do you have any examples?
Sure! For chalkboards pictured up top:
1 - A custom wedding chalkboard done on-site at the venue the day of the wedding. The custom design and on site work took me 8.66 hrs total, so this project came to $645.
2 - A source board of ingredients for the SweetGreen in Richmond, VA. It took me around 5.5 hours to complete, including a little bit of custom layout plus creating proper spacing and chalk lettering everything in, so this project came to $412.50.
3 - A mockup of an A-frame chalkboard for retail stores. This is estimated to take around 2.5-3 hrs including the custom design and on-site work; so it will run $187 - $225 ish.
